About:

Toussaint J. Miller is a multidisciplinary practitioner working at the intersection of ceramics, music, and the histories of science and medicine.

Across his practice, he investigates how music and the visual arts have functioned as sites of care and repair across time. These concerns are shaped by his academic background in medicine and the history of science, where he engages critically with the systems through which knowledge about bodies is produced and communicated.

Ceramics has become a central site of inquiry within this framework. Through clay, Miller explores how material processes can operate as forms of repair and knowledge-making. This work is particularly attentive to the role of the image in modern medicine, and the ways in which visual culture has been used to construct and circulate narratives of Black inferiority.

Bringing together his work in music, medicine, ceramics, and history, Miller approaches his practice as a means of bridging scientific inquiry and representational justice.

He was recently appointed the youngest member of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Community Engagement Committee.
